Buying used equipment: inspect the unit and the deal

The serial number, condition, parts and return terms matter as much as the asking price.

Ask for the full make, model, serial number and configuration before paying. Compare that identity with the manufacturer's current instructions and any safety notices. Confirm that the required components are present, the device works as intended and a qualified person can assess fit and use. For powered devices, ask about battery age, charger compatibility and replacement availability.

Get the seller's written account of condition, repairs, cleaning, ownership and return terms. Check that local service and replacement parts exist. A photograph cannot show hidden wear, altered controls or whether a device fits the intended user. Do not rely on a generic online listing to decide medical suitability.

The cash price, delivery and later repair cost may differ from a Medicare-covered purchase or rental pathway. A used item advertised online is not automatically eligible for reimbursement. Before changing a prescribed or professionally fitted device, ask the qualified clinical and equipment team whether the proposed item and configuration are appropriate.

READER CHECKLIST

Inspect the exact used unit

A checklist prepares questions; it cannot certify safety or fit.

  • Identity: Get the make, model, serial number and configuration.
  • Condition: Request written repair, cleaning, battery and charger history where relevant.
  • Notice: Check the manufacturer's instructions and current device-specific safety notices.
  • Support: Confirm local parts, service, return terms and a qualified fit assessment.
  • Payment: Confirm cash terms or the exact coverage pathway; an online listing is not a reimbursement approval.
